100 Things about Me

1. I'm left-handed, left-footed, left-eyed, you name it... but when playing Finnish baseball I bat from the right.

2. I have brown eyes.

3. My dark brown hair is naturally curly. Yes, I mean no, I'm not one of those typical Nordic beauties with straight blond hair and blue eyes. :)

4. I was born on Valentine's Day, except back then we did not celebrate Valentine's Day here.

5. I work where the books live. I got a summer job in a library after my first year at the university and that was it.

6. I love dancing. I started with ballet, but moved on to ballroom dancing when I was 15.

7. I have had the same wonderful dance partner for over 20 years now!

8. I & Mr. Dance Partner were undefeated Finnish senior 10-dance champions in 2007-2009. Since then we have concentrated on standard dances only.

9. I also love tennis.

10. I'm a total fan girl when it comes to women's professional tennis. :)

11. I learned to read on my own when I was 5.

12. I speak three languages well and a couple more not so well.

13. I'm trying to learn Slovene. Not easy!

14. I've lived my whole life, except for 4 months, in Helsinki, Finland.

15. I lived 4 months in Oslo, Norway, when I was 21.

16. I love my home city.

17. I love travelling.

18. This far I have only travelled in Europe.

19. I have this thing for falling in love with a country and then wanting to learn the language. It started with England when I was 7 and since then it has happened with Norway, Italy, France and Slovenia.

20. I (almost) always travel with my laptop. I always travel with my iPod.


21. My favorite writer is Virginia Woolf, and no, I don't get everything she's written.

22. The same applies to my second favorite Jeanette Winterson.

23. My third and fourth favorite writers are much easier reads: Elizabeth Peters and Gail Carriger.

24. I love my country, but I do not love the climate. Longer summers and less snow would be much appreciated, thank you very much!

25. I'm an only child.

26. My mother passed away when I was 16.

27. It hit me very hard 10 years later.

28. My father has always been there for me. I can talk with him about anything.

29. My views are very liberal (in the European sense of the word).

30. Gay rights and multiculturalism are very important to me.


31. I am pro EU.

32. I like the fact that we have the common currency in many EU countries. It makes travelling so easy. :)

33. I like to write.

34. I used to write poems, but have not had the inspiration for a couple of years now. I think my poem-writing-days are over. I'm not too sad about that. :)

35. If I won the lottery, I would get a villa somewhere in the coast in Slovenia.

36. I don't drive as I don't have a driver's lisence. If I won the lottery, I might get one, until then, I'm perfectly happy without.

37. My favorite colour is burgundy.

38. My favorite red wine is from Burgundy.

39. I used to hate red wine, but I taught myself to drink it.

40. No, I have never been drunk in my life! And never will be either!

41. I don't like coffee.

42. I don't like going to the sauna. No coffee, no sauna, what a bad excuse for a Finn I am!!!

43. Even more than coffee or red vine I used to hate tea.

44. I taught myself to drink tea.

45. I went a tiny bit over the top with it. Now I love tea and my tea collection grows every time I travel.

46. I'm not going to teach myself to dring beer or hard liquor!

47. I hate smoking. If you ask me, it should be banned! Luckily we have a rather strict law against smoking in public places over here.

48. I'm shy.

49. But you would not guess it, if you met me. :)

50. I talk, a lot. And sometimes with my hands.

51. I have no problem talking to an auditorium full of people or dancing in front of hundreds.

52. I'm stubborn. Well, Mr. Dance Partner would say I'm very stubborn! :)

53. I love chocolate -too much.

54. I once spent 2 years without eating any chocolate at all.

55. I was anorectic when I was about 14-15. Luckily it did not get all too far and I recovered from it on my own.

56. I learned my lesson back then and it will never happen again.

57. I watch very little TV.

58. I don't even own a radio.

59. I do spend a fair amount of time each day with my laptop.

60. I love to wear bracelets. I usually wear more than one at a time.

61. I love pretty dresses.

62. But I hardly ever wear one.

63. I usually wear pants.

63. I don't wear any make up.

64. Except on special occasions and in dance competitions.

65. I love designing my competition gowns and I decorate them myself. That means glueing thousands of tiny rhinestones on fabric. :)

66. I also like to make bead and wire jewellery.

67. I own all too many books. Well, that was a given, wasn't it? :)

68. Of all the books I own I have read an embarrasingly small amount. Have to do something to rectify that, have to!!!

68. I don't remember a time when I didn't have any library books at home. I always have books from the library at home.

69. I love my job! :)

70. I have a wonderful team of people working in my library.

71. I love old movies from 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

72. My favorite old time movie stars include Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall and Katherine Hepburn.

73. I have an MA in history from the University of Helsinki.

74. I also studied information science in the University of Tampere to qualify as a librarian.

75. I have never had a history related job. See thing number 5.

76. But I do have a title for a Ph.D. dissertation.

77. I just don't have time to do the research for one.

78. I'm a very bad lier.

79. I value honesty very much.

80. I have to keep in shape because of dancing.

81. I have dance practise 4 times a week and I play tennis twice a week.

82. In addition to that I go to the gym and do some jogging.

83. I hate jogging, but love the feeling afterwards.

84. I spend the metro+tram ride to work listening to music and reading.

85. I hardly ever come straight home from work.

86. I go to dance practise instead.

87. I get easily bored with long books. (Should not really say this, I know, I know...)

88. I read more books in English than in my mother tongue.

89. I have no qualms to drop a book I don't like.

90. It's my dream to become a published novelist...

91. ...and the Finnish senior 1 standard dance champion.

92. I love to learn new things.

93. I love getting to know new people.

94. I'm single.

95. But I'm lucky to have some really great friends, both male and female, in my life.

96. I've known two of my closest gal pals longer than I can remember!

97. I have two godchildren, they are children of the above mentioned gal pals.

98. I'm an optimist.

99. I still believe in miracles.

100. I'm mostly happy with my life. :)
